SUPP’s list of election candidates sent to PM

May 18, 2012

KUALA LUMPUR, May 18 — The Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) has submitted its list of candidates for the next general election to Prime Minister and Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Datuk Seri Najib Razak, said party president Datuk Seri Peter Chin.

He said the candidates were for the parliamentary seats of Bandar Kuching, Stampin, Serian, Sarikei, Sibu, Lanang and Miri.

“There are four new faces among the seven candidates but I can’t reveal to you who they are and how many names we have submitted. It is confidential,” he told Bernama when contacted.

Chin (picture), who is energy, green technology and water minister, said the final decision on the choice of candidates rested with Najib.

In the 2008 general election, SUPP retained six parliamentary seats — Serian, Sarikei, Miri, Sibu, Lanang and Stampin — and lost Bandar Kuching to the DAP.

In 2010, it lost Sibu in a by-election following the death of the MP, Datuk Robert Lau Hoi Chew.

“As president of SUPP, I, like other party leaders, have to make sure that the candidates picked are winnable candidates. That’s why they will have to go through a selection process. Therefore, I’m not going to reveal the names yet as any of those nominated may not be picked,” Chin said.

He also said the party would be celebrating its 53rd anniversary on June 4 at the party headquarters in Kuching.

He said various activities had been planned in conjunction with the anniversary celebration, which would be held over a period of one month. — Bernama
