Teenager detained over ‘baby-in-backpack’ case

July 07, 2012

KUALA TERENGGANU, July 7 — A teenager was detained today to assist in the investigation into the case of a 16-year-old student who hid her newborn baby in a backpack, resulting in the infant’s death last Tuesday.

State Criminal Investigations Department chief ACP K. Manoharan said the suspect was picked up at his house in Kampung Cherang Guling, Marang, near here, at about 4am this morning.

The suspect has been remanded until July 13, he added.

“Early investigations revealed that the girl and the suspect were not a couple but were believed to have had sexual intercourse twice last year.

The girl had reportedly given birth at her school hostel on Tuesday, concealed the baby in a backpack and handed it to a classmate who had unknowingly kept the dead infant for 17 hours. — Bernama
