Thai woman arrested after RM722,000 drugs found in bag
ALOR STAR, Aug 6 — A Thai woman was arrested after a crystalline substance, believed to be syabu, weighing 38kg was found in her bag during scanning at the Bukit Kayu Hitam Immigration Complex near here last Friday.
Kedah Customs director Datuk Abd Aziz Abdul Latif said the drugs worth RM722,000, which were stuffed in four plastic packets, were found concealed at the bottom of the bag.
He said the woman, 33, who was travelling with two children, was among passengers who alighted from a bus, bound for Kuala Lumpur from Hatyai, for immigration clearance and luggage scanning.
The suspect, who has no previous records, has been remanded and will be investigated under section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for drug trafficking which carries the mandatory death sentence, if convicted, Abd Aziz told reporters here today.
Meanwhile, he said Kedah Customs seized firecrackers worth RM3,330 in operations at seven Ramadan bazaars — four in Sungai Petani and three here — since August 1.
He said a trader was arrested in Alor Star for selling firecrackers while no arrests were made in Sungai Petani as the traders managed to give Customs officers the slip. — Bernama
