KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 3 — Singapore’s first Deputy Prime Minister Toh Chin Chye, 90, died earlier this morning at his home in the island republic, the Straits Times reported.

Born in Taiping on December 10, 1921, Toh was among Singapore’s first generation of leaders, together with Malacca-born Goh Keng Swee and S. Rajaratnam, who was born in Sri Lanka but grew up in Seremban and Selangor before settling in the island nation.

Toh co-founded the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) in 1954 with Rajaratnam and Singapore’s long-serving former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, among others. He was also its first chairman.

He was also Singapore’s science and technology minister and its health minister.

He retired from its Cabinet in 1981 but remained a backbencher until he quit politics altogether in 1988.
