KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 2 – Two friends wanting to watch a fireworks display on Merdeka eve at the Petronas Twin Towers (KLCC) ended up being assaulted by a group of teenagers near Jalan Pinang, here.

In the 10.15pm incident, Lau Chee Kin, 27, and a friend were walking towards KLCC from their office at Jalan Imbi when they were suddenly set upon by the youngsters.

One of the attackers was also said to have uttered a racist remark against the duo.

In a note posted on his Facebook account, Lau, an operations manager in an Information Technology firm, said they then proceeded to make a report at a police beat base at the Pavilion shopping mall but claimed that the police officers there did not want to take down their report.

Lau claimed that they were told that they could only make such a report at a police counter in a hospital after they had sought medical treatment.

They then made a report at the Dang Wangi police station the next day.

Lau said he was not out to gain sympathy for his posting but added that he wanted to share his account on the incident as anyone could have suffered the same fate.

City Criminal Investigation Department head Datuk Ku Chin Wah, who confirmed the report, said police were looking into Lau’s claims.

“The department’s disciplinary board has started an internal inquiry and if it was a case of the officers’ misconduct, stern action will be taken,” he said.

Ku said on the same night, police also received seven reports on similar attacks and theft in the vicinity.

“A gang fight also broke out in Jalan Raja Chulan, involving about 30 teenagers, aged between 15 and 19 from Selayang and Sentul, that same night.

Three of them were severely injured and hospitalised while seven others had been detained for investigations. Police had also seized several weapons from the remanded suspects.

It is also learnt that the police are also trying to establish whether the teenagers are the same culprits who had attacked Lau and his friend at Jalan Pinang. – Bernama
