July 06, 2012

SANDAKAN, July 6 — Two primary school pupils drowned while four others escaped when the boat they were in was hit by waves, causing it to capsize off Pulau Timbang waters, here today.

In the incident that occurred at around 1pm, the victims from Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Kampung Baru were on their way home to Kampung Serabut.

The dead have been identified as Sabturina binti Mohd Noor, 10, a Year Four pupil and Zulaika binti Amri, 12, a Year Six pupil whose body has yet to be recovered.

The four who survived were the 30-year-old boat driver, who is also Zulaika’s father and two of his sons and another daughter aged between one and five.

A search operation for Zulaika mounted by the villagers assisted by marine police was called off at 6pm due to fading light and huge waves. — Bernama
