UK tabloid claims Malaysian businessman bought RM14.5b gold yacht

July 21, 2011

KUALA LUMPUR, July 21 — An anonymous Malaysian businessman has spent £3 billion (RM14.5 billion) on a yacht made from solid gold and platinum, the Daily Mail reported yesterday.

Up to 100 tonnes of precious metals were used to build the History Supreme, from the gold-wrapped base to the deck, dining area and anchor, according to the British tabloid.

Platinum adorns the master bedroom, which has a wall feature made from meteoric stone and a genuine T-Rex dinosaur bone.

"It's enough to make even Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich turn a distinct shade of green," the Daily Mail said.

The 100-foot bespoke yacht was designed by Liverpool-based jeweller Stuart Hughes, 39, who took three years to complete the vessel.

Hughes, who also built a diamond-wrapped £5 million iPhone, told another British redtop, The Sun, he was "delighted" with the History Supreme, his most ambitious project to date.

"The businessman just approached us and asked us whether we could do it. He wanted a plane done as well, but the thing would never take off if we did," Hughes said.

"So he said, 'Can you do the yacht?' and I said, 'We'll give it a crack.' Then it was pretty much a case of can you make this gold, can you make that gold?"

"We just did what we were told and are delighted with the result."

The Sun said the yacht was built in Italy and completed in Malaysia two weeks ago.
