PARIT, Sept 7 — State-level Umno Youth movements and divisions nationwide have been asked to open voter registration counters in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house organized by Umno divisions, said Umno
Youth membership and voter registration bureau chairman Hishamuddin Yahya. He said all bureaus need to take advantage of the open house to register as many voters, especially existing members, as new voters.
“We target at least 20,000 new voters to register with the Election Commission (EC) through the many open houses held this year,” he told reporters after an Aidilfitri contribution presentation ceremony in Kampung Senin, here today.
Hishamuddin said the move was aimed at taking advantage of the situation at such programmes, adding that each divisional-level Aidilfitri open house is expected to receive between 10,000 to 20,000 guests.
“We hope other Barisan Nasional (BN) component parties will also open up counters because we expect visitors from all races to attend,” he said.
Hishammuddin said they would be able to achieve their goal of registering 20,000 new voters, if each Division registered 100 people.
He added that Umno Youth has identified that 155,471 of the 618,965 members, aged between 21 to 40, have not registered as voters.
Efforts will be carried out to ensure that at least 70 per cent, or 108,829, of the unregistered members become voters by year end. — Bernama
