UPKO president confident BN will win next GE
Dompok said Sabah was still a BN stronghold. — File picKOTA KINABALU, Aug 13 — United Pasokmomogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation (UPKO) president Tan Sri Bernard Dompok has expressed confidence that the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) will emerge victorious in the upcoming general election, particularly in the Sabah state election.
He said based on the people’s support, Sabah remained a BN stronghold and called on the people, especially the Kadazandusun Murut (KDM) community, to stay put in BN for a common good.
“No doubt that BN is strong in Sabah, but it cannot be denied that there will be challenges in the urban and suburban areas.
“But I’m confident BN will ultimately emerge victorious in the coming election,” he said during the launching of the Iftar (breaking fast ceremony) and 1 Malaysia Ramadan contribution at the Information, Communications and Culture Ministry’s Integrated Complex (KPKK) in Kepayan near here last night.
Dompok, who is also Primary Industries and Commodities Minister, refuted his former UPKO deputy president Datuk Wilfred Bumburing’s claim that 40 per cent of UPKO leaders had left to join the opposition Pakatan Rakyat.
“I wish to stress here that only Bumburing, a vice-president of UPKO, a permanent chairman and a few leaders including supreme council members have left the party,” he said, adding the people should not be easily hoodwinked by the opposition which made grand promises to fish for votes.
Yesterday, UPKO vice-president Senator Datuk Maijol Mahap formally confirmed his decision to leave the ruling pact at a function held at his house in Kampung Kokobuan in Kota Marudu.
Maijol is the third BN leader to leave the pact since last month, after Bumburing and a former federal deputy minister and Umno supreme council member, Datuk Seri Lajim Ukin. — Bernama
