Woman dies after being set ablaze outside home

June 29, 2012

KUALA LUMPUR, June 29 — Bank clerk P. Yoga Ambiga was burnt to death in front of her unit at the Mesra Prime Apartment in Kampung Ampang Campuran, Ampang last night.

Initial police investigations have indicated that a man was waiting for the 27-year-old to return from work before setting her ablaze outside the unit at 10.15pm.

“She had just returned home when a man attacked and set her ablaze in front of the apartment unit” Ampang Jaya deputy police chief Supt Nazri Nawawi said.

“We do not rule out the possibility the murder was motivated by jealousy,” he said, adding that Yoga Ambiga’s purse containing valuables, and mobile phone were intact.

A neighbour identified only as Efa, 32, said she was watching television when she heard screams outside the unit.

“When I opened the door, I saw Yoga Ambiga ablaze, while another neighbour tried to douse the flames.

“The incident happened very fast as it was over in 10 minutes. I think the victim was assaulted before being set on fire as she sounded weak,” she said.

Efa said the victim, who was staying with a sister at the unit, was engaged two weeks ago.

The body was sent to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital for a post mortem examination. — Bernama
