Would-be hijackers crash bus into streetlamp
IPOH, July 5 — Four youths waylaid and assaulted a bus driver who was ferrying five school pupils, before hijacking the vehicle in Jalan Lim Boon Seng here today.
However, the hijackers did not go far. The bus, driven by one of them, skidded and crashed into a lamp-post, forcing them to flee empty-handed in the incident about 6.50am.
Perak Transit bus driver D. Maniraja, 50, who sustained head and body injuries in the assault, lodged a police report.
He said he had stopped the bus at a junction, en route to Bercham from Medan Kidd, when four youths hurled stones at its windows.
One of them banged on the door.
“When I opened the door, they struck me on the head and body. I escaped from the assailants while the five pupils were ordered out of the vehicle.
“The assailants left the scene in the bus before it hit a lamp-post near the Riverfront Hotel, about 500 metres from the scene,” he told Bernama when met at the city police headquarters.
A police spokesman confirmed the incident. — Bernama
