European chefs gather for Bocuse cook-out
GENEVA, June 8 — Twenty young chefs gathered in Geneva yesterday to take part in a two-day cooking fest aiming for the top prize in the European leg of the renowned Bocuse d’Or competition.
Today, the jury will not only name the top three winners, but also pick the 12 competitors who will go on to the worldwide Bocuse d’Or competition in January.
Each team of a chef and an assistant is to produce two dishes — a Norwegian halibut and a Swiss veal — in five hours and 35 minutes in an exhibition hall.
Two garnishes are to accompany each dish, which will be whipped up in a 18 square-metre kitchen.
The Danes, Belgians and Italians have been touted as the likely winners this year.
Bocuse d’Or, dubbed the Olympic Games of cooking, is named after internationally renowned French chef Paul Bocuse, who was among the founders of the contest.
For the young chef competitors, many of whom are unknown to the public, the Bocuse d’Or is an opportunity to earn a reputation and launch their careers.
Paris celebrity chefs Michel Roth of the Ritz hotel and Yannick Alleno of the Hotel Meurice are among previous winners.
This year’s jury is headed by French chef Daniel Boulud. He is accompanied by two Swiss chefs, Fredy Girardet and Philippe Rochat. — AFP-Relaxnews
