PETALING JAYA, May 15 — More than two million youth are expected to attend next week’s National Youth Day celebrations in Putrajaya, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said today.

He said the event, scheduled for May 23-27, will be a “peaceful” one which will showcase the government’s commitment to the country’s young Malaysians.

“Last year, it was one million; this year, it will be more than two million.

“Let us make National Youth Day celebrations this year a symbol of togetherness between the youth and the government,” he said at the launch of the festival.

“Other parties know how to gather here, gather there, they do not solve problems... some people say they want to take over Putrajaya,” the deputy prime minister (picture) said, referring to Pakatan Rakyat (PR) as well as electoral reform group Bersih 3.0.

Muhyiddin stressed that the government is committed to nurturing and training youth, and pointed out that RM200 million has already been allocated in the 2012 Budget under the “Strategic Action Youth 1Malaysia” initiative.

“Through this scheme, the government has prepared all sorts of training programmes for youth which are overseen by expert training institutions in the country.

“During the training, trainees will undergo practical (courses) in GLCs and private companies to facilitate them finding employment once they graduate,” he said.

Muhyiddin added that the government has also formed MyCreative Venture Capital, a company with a RM200 start-up capital to help young entrepreneurs start businesses.

“The government also gives priority to the developmental aspect of the nation’s youth leaders. The ministry of youth and sports has been given an allocation of RM320 million under the 2012 Budget to conduct youth leadership activities on a state and district level,” he added.
