Edmund Hiew, 26, was arrested last month when he was pulled over by the police for not wearing a seat-belt while driving with four of his friends.
The bank manager was later charged for obstructing an officer from carrying out his duties.
On Tuesday, Chuah told reporters that Hiew had failed to stop his car when he was flagged down by the police and only did so after driving for 150 meters.
Chuah added that Hiew had initially refused to provide his IC and driving license, questioning the policeman’s authority. Although
Hiew finally did provide his IC after several requests but he only gave a receipt of his renewal for driving license.
“He even started scolding my office in a Chinese dialect and only stopped when the officer called for reinforcement,” said Chuah.
Today, Hiew explained that he was reluctant to give his IC and driving license because the officer’s name tag and police serial number was covered.
“Yes, I was reluctant to give my MyKad because I could see that the policeman was trying to cover his name tag and serial number. I was not sure if he was really a police offer. So I only wanted to call Rasah MP Anthony Loke for legal advice on what I should do but I never refused to provide my MyKad and driving licence,” he told reporters at Bukit Aman.
He also denied he had stopped his car after 150 meters and stressed that it was nearly impossible as Jalan Laksamana Cheng Ho was busy and located near the city centre.
“I never scolded him in Chinese and was very polite. If I did scold him in Chinese then can he please tell me what I said in Chinese?” Hiew asked.
Hiew also lodged a complaint to Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar against the police officer for abuse of power.
“I am still discussing with my lawyers if I want to proceed with legal action against the police officer,” he said.
