Kit Siang: Utusan Malaysia hired ‘serial liars’ for Umno’s anti-DAP plot
KUALA LUMPUR, June 5 — Lim Kit Siang today accused Utusan Malaysia of hiring a team of “serial liars” to help the newspaper in its alleged role as the mouthpiece for Umno’s “DDD Brigade”, a campaign he claims was masterminded by the ruling party to destroy the DAP.
The DAP adviser even listed out four categories of the alleged “serial liars” working in the Umno-owned daily — from the editorial ranks of the paper, former DAP leaders, a group of Barisan Nasional (BN) party hacks, and “guest serial liars”, a term Lim used to describe Utusan’s pro-Umno guest columnists.
“I must congratulate the editorial chiefs of Utusan Malaysia — the official mouthpiece of Umno — for achieving something no other media in Malaysia could ever achieve.
“In fact, it will not be easy to find international competitors for Utusan Malaysia in the whole wide world of global journalism,” the Gelang Patah MP (picture) said in a statement here.
“Undoubtedly, Utusan Malaysia stands head and shoulders above all media, not only in Malaysia but world-wide, as the champion serial liar as the centrepiece of the Demolish/Destroy DAP (DDD) Brigade in the 13GE,” he said, using the abbreviation that refers to the 13th general election.
Among the lies Lim claimed the paper has spread against his party over the last eight months was today’s front page which alleged that the DAP was now holding branch-level elections to pre-empt any action by the Registrar of Societies (RoS).
But citing DAP National Organising Secretary Anthony Loke’s rebuttal, Lim said that branch-level elections are an annual affair for the party and they were held back this year to June due to Election 2013.
In his remarks today, Loke had also accused Utusan Malaysia of plotting to have the RoS act on his party by accusing the DAP of manipulating its branch-level elections to quell internal dissent.
In its report today, Utusan cited an unnamed source as saying the DAP leadership was “hastening” its annual general assembly and branch level elections to pre-empt any attempts by grassroots leaders to question its recently concluded party elections, which is now under RoS investigation.
“This is Utusan’s latest agenda, to play on our administrative matters. This is a big lie. It is called an annual general assembly so of course we have to hold it annually and the party’s elections at the branch level is also done annually.
“They are trying to portray as if we are very scared, that we have so many secrets to hide...it’s an attempt to give the RoS the justification to de-register us,” Loke told a press conference here.
Apart from today’s front-page, Lim also pointed to other falsehoods that the paper allegedly published recently, including a claim that some 753 Indian party delegates had not been notified of its congress last year and lost their right to vote.
“There is no logic, but there is madness, in the campaign of the DDD Brigade to smear and defame the DAP in the blackest hues but unfortunately to Umno/BN War Room which housed this DDD Brigade — completely to no avail,” Lim said.
“The gargantuan investments in the Umno/BN DDD Brigade, with Utusan Malaysia as the centrepiece, had been a total waste of money for it had proved to be singularly ineffective and even counter-productive in terms of the outcome of the 13GE,” he added.
