KLIA2 on track for May opening
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 2 — KLIA2, the world’s largest terminal purpose built for low cost carriers, is 70 per cent complete and is on track to commence operations in May, said Malaysia Airports today.
The general manager for construction for KLIA2, Mohd Zaifuddin Idris, said that building work is expected to be completed by the end of January while infrastructure work is expected to be completed by the end of March.
“We are on track for opening on May 1,” said Zaifuddin at the witnessing ceremony of the completion of the KLIA2 skybridge, the first in Asia and third in the world.
He also said that apart from the airlines now flying to the current low cost carrier terminal, another “one or two more” are expected to use KLIA2.
Among the new carriers expected to fly into KLIA2 is the new Malaysia-Indonesia joint venture airline Malindo.
Zaifuddin also said that community airline Firefly has asked for space at KLIA2.
He said that there were a few outstanding issues for AirAsia with KLIA2 including the clearing and check-in systems.
Zaifuddin also said that the cost for KLIA2 remained at RM4 billion with no foreseeable increases in the scope of work that could push up the terminal’s price tag.
The 300-metre Skybridge at KLIA2 will connect the main and satellite terminals and has sufficient clearance for large aircraft, including the Airbus A380, to pass underneath.
The Skybridge has 60 metres of walkalators and will facilitate travel between the two terminals within five minutes.
Malaysia Airports said that the Skybridge was purposely built to cross the taxiway and features a glass wall to allow passengers the opportunity to enjoy “a spectacular view” of the airside.
The airport operator also said that the Skybridge offers greater manoeuvrability for aircraft at the apron as compared with a land bridge.
The Skybridge cost approximately RM150 million to built and contractor UEMC-Bina Puri was responsible for the design and construction.
The structure weighs 3,050 metric tonnes.
Nine airlines currently fly to the existing low cost carrier terminal — AirAsia, AirAsia X, Thai AirAsia, AirAsia Indonesia, AirAsia Philippines, Cebu Pacific, Tiger, Airphil and Mandala.
Two other budget carriers — Zest and Jetstar — use the main terminal at KLIA.
