GEORGE TOWN, Sept 6 — Penang will hold a free Siti Nurhaliza concert on September 25 to celebrate the first Malaysia Day holiday this year.

The concert, sponsored by the state government and private organisations, will take place at the Stadium Bandaraya Pulau Pinang and is open to all Malaysians.

The event will also be graced by Penang Governor Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said the “Menyambut Hari Malaysia Bersama Datuk Siti Nurhaliza” concert is being held in conjunction with the inaugural Malaysia Day holiday this year.

“Since this year is the first year that Malaysians are celebrating the formation of Malaysia including Sabah and Sarawak as a national holiday, the Penang state government wants to make this important occasion a memorable and happy one,” he said.

“With top Malaysian and international performer Datuk Siti Nurhaliza, it will not only be an unforgettable occasion but also reminds all Penangites, Sabahans , Sarawakians and Malaysians that we are all tied together in one family and one destiny,” he added.

Lim said those attending the concert will only be required to purchase a RM1 bottle state-produced mineral water each, to assist the organisers in determining the attendance.

He said the state is expecting “tens of thousands” to throng to the concert, which is also the singer’s first performance in Penang.

This state-funded concert appears to be an attempt to reach out to Malay voters following several incidents that have portrayed the state government and Lim as anti-Malay and anti-Islam.

Lim’s administration has been under attack for the past few months over the controversies surrounding the Bazar Ramadan, the mention of the chief minister’s name during Friday sermons, and a doctored picture purportedly showing him slaughtering a cow for Hari Raya Haji.
