Students demonstrate at Malaysian embassy in Jakarta

Sep 04, 2010

JAKARTA, Sept 4 — Forty students wearing military-style uniform are the latest group to demonstrate at the Malaysian embassy following the incident in waters near Pulau Bintan on August 13.

In the 75-minute demonstration, the students, claiming to be from the Indonesian Undergraduate Regiment, said that they were ready to engage in “physical and non-physical” warfare against Malaysia and urged the Indonesian people to adopt a warlike attitude towards Malaysia.

The demonstrators also wanted the Indonesian government to be stern in protecting Indonesian sovereignty and asked Malaysia to apologise to Indonesia and respect the country.

At one stage, they were pushing Indonesian policemen who had prevented them from approaching the Malaysian embassy gates.

They said they would stage another demonstration at the same venue on Tuesday.

Several groups have staged demonstrations in front of the Malaysian embassy and buildings owned by Malaysian companies here to show their anger with regard to the incident involving the authorities of both countries who had detained those who had encroached into territorial waters which are still in dispute.

Malaysia and Indonesia are scheduled to have a meeting in Kota Kinabalu on Monday to discuss the incident, which has strained bilateral relations, and the dispute over maritime boundaries in four other segments. — Bernama
