Colin Firth. — AFP picOS ANGELES, May 23 — Colin Firth has signed to the film The Happy Prince, a biopic about Oscar Wilde to be directed by Rupert Everett (Hysteria, Shrek), marking the actor’s directorial debut.

Everett will also write the dramedy and star in the film as the legendary writer, according to Variety. Firth will play his friend Reginald Turner. The story is set during Wilde’s last days, as he reflects back on his life with his inimitable wit and wisdom.

Production is scheduled for next summer.

The film also features Emily Watson (The War Horse), Tom Wilkinson (Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol) and James Fox (Sherlock Holmes).

Other films about the author include 1997’s Wilde, starring Stephen Fry in the titular role and featuring Jude Law, Michael Sheen, Vanessa Redgrave and Wilkinson.

Last seen in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Firth will appear next in the crime comedy Gambit with Cameron Diaz, Alan Rickman and Stanley Tucci, releasing this fall.

Watson will appear in Anna Karenina starring Keira Knightley, Jude Law and Aaron Johnson, due in theatres in September.

Everett will star in Justin and Knights of Valour with Antonio Banderas and Saoirse Ronan. — AFP-Relaxnews
