Batman ousts ‘The Expendables’ from the top spot at the worldwide box office

LOS ANGELES, Sept 4 — Thanks to its release in China, "The Dark Knight Rises" is back at the top of the global box office.

From August 31 to September 2, the blockbuster netted US$52.28 million (RM162 million) in 65 countries, providing a sufficient boost to lift it back to the top of the charts. Released on August 27 in China, the movie was able to dislodge another Hollywood powerhouse, "The Expendables 2", from the first spot, relegating it to third place with US$28.8 million across 21 countries, according to data from Rentrak. The final chapter of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy has grossed more than a billion dollars since its release.

Second place goes to" The Amazing Spider-Man", which raked in US$33.7 million in 59 territories. Once again, success in Chinese theatres propelled the film towards the top of the global charts.

"The Possession" claimed fourth place with global earnings US$21.23 million, as it took possession of the top spot in North America (US$17.73 million). "The Bourne Legacy" is fifth with US$19.85 million across 38 countries. — AFP/Relaxnews
