Film trailer: Hanks and Berry in six-minute preview of ‘Cloud Atlas’
LOS ANGELES, July 27 — The first trailer for “Cloud Atlas”, starring Tom Hanks and Halle Berry, was released yesterday in an extended six-minute preview of this ambitious mystery, romance and dramatic sci-fi film.
The upcoming epic adventure from three directors — Andy and Lana Wachowski (“The Matrix” trilogy) and Tom Tykwer (“Run Lola Run”) — is an adaptation of David Mitchell's 2004 award-winning century-spanning novel.
A still from ‘Cloud Atlas’ — AFP/RelaxnewsAn array of settings and situations are featured in this visually arresting trailer featuring the same actors playing multiple roles across six storylines — underscoring the thematic interconnectedness of life and exploring how someone's actions impacts another and reverberates in the past, present and future.
Images including an old sailing ship crossing the sea, Berry in a slow-motion car crash and Korean actress Doona Bae as a clone waitress offer an idea of the plot jumping from the South Pacific in the 19th century to California circa the 1970s, and from present-day England to a dystopian near future.
The cast also includes Jim Broadbent (“Harry Potter”), Hugh Grant (“Music and Lyrics”), Hugo Weaving (“The Hobbit”), and Susan Sarandon (“Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps”).
The trailer is accompanied by a video with rare commentary by the three directors.
