July 02, 2012

LOS ANGELES, July 2 — Sunday nights on HBO have a tradition of offering great television shows, from “Sex & the City” to “The Sopranos” and “Boardwalk Empire”. The channel’s latest series, “The Newsroom”, premiered on June 24 and is available as a preview for non-subscribers to the premium channel.

HBO announced on June 25 that it was making the first episode of “The Newsroom” available for free viewing in the US on HBO.com, YouTube and on-demand platforms and as a free podcast on iTunes through July 23.

The series, written by Oscar winner Aaron Sorkin (“The Social Network”, “West Wing”), stars Jeff Daniels (“Good Night, Good Luck”) as a television news anchor, Will McAvoy, who switches to the underdog team.

“The Newsroom” had a strong 2.1 million viewers, one of HBO’s highest debuted shows. It chronicles the behind-the-scenes events at ACN, a fictional cable news channel, dealing with the corporation vs. commercial demands.

The strong ensemble cast includes Sam Waterston (“Law and Order”), Dev Patel (“Slumdog Millionaire”), Emily Mortimer (“Hugo”, “Shutter Island”) and Jane Fonda as the CEO. Ironically, Fonda was married to the former owner of CNN, Ted Turner. Ironically, Fonda was married to the former owner of CNN, Ted Turner.
