International box office: ‘Mission: Impossible’ remains at the top

LOS ANGELES, Feb 6 —  With frigid temperatures gripping Europe, the weekend worldwide revenues were dominated by China, which accounted for US$19.8 million (RM59.6 million) of M:I Ghost Protocol's take of US$25.8 million (RM77.7 million) across 64 markets. This brings the total gross for the fourth installment of Mission: Impossible over the US$600 million (RM1.8 billion) mark to stay in first place.

In addition, Ghost Protocol, starring Tom Cruise and Jeremy Renner, opened first in Finland and third in Italy, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

In second, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games) and Michael Caine, made US$14.1 million (RM42.5 million) from 19 territories, bringing its total to US$41.5 million (RM124.9 million). 

The sequel to Journey to the Center of the Earth opened in the top spot in Mexico and third in the UK. It opens in North America next weekend. 

In third place, Chronicle debuted with US$13 million (RM39 million) in 33 countries. The indie film opened in first in the UK and Australia and also won the box office in the US with US$22 million (RM66 million). The action sci-fi story about teens acquiring supernatural telekinetic powers features relatively unknown actors. 

Ranking fourth, Underworld: Awakening, the latest installment of the sci-fi horror films starring Kate Beckinsale, made US$11.9 million (RM35.8 million) from 57 markets.

The fourth installment of this werewolf-versus-vampire franchise opened in first in Singapore and second in Germany for a worldwide total of US$108.2 million (RM325.8 million).

Fifth was the Oscar nominee for best picture, The Descendants starring Oscar nominee George Clooney, drawing US$11.2 million (RM33.7 million) from 43 markets, making US$110.3 million (RM332.1 million) worldwide. The family drama stayed in first in Spain for the third week.

Other notable films include the top film in France, La vérité si je mens 3 (Would I Lie To You?), director Thomas Gilou's third installment in the comedy series, which collected US$10.2 million (RM30.7 million).

Also, Adam Sandler's comedy Jack and Jill opened in first in Russia, second in the Ukraine and fifth in the UK, bringing in US$8 million (RM24 million) from 38 territories for a total of US$114.1 million (RM343.6 million) around the world. — AFP-Relaxnews
