Top 10 videos on demand in the US: ‘Contraband’ stays on top

“Haywire” movie poster — AFP picLOS ANGELES, May 16 − The week’s top watched films on-demand (VOD) titles were announced Monday by Rentrak, based on data collected over the period April 30-May 6, 2012, with Contrabrand holding the lead for the second week in a row.

The crime thriller stars Mark Wahlberg (The Fighter) and Kate Beckinsale (Underworld) and is about a former drug smuggler getting into the game with counterfeit bills to protect a family member.

Just released to VOD on May 1, Haywire enters the list at No. 2. Starring Ewan McGregor (Beginners), Michael Fassbender (X-Men: First Class) and Mixed Martial Arts star Gina Carano, the thriller directed by Steven Soderbergh (Contagion, Ocean’s 13) focusses on a black ops soldier seeking revenge for a betrayal during a mission.

Other newly released debuts are New Year’s Eve with the all-star ensemble cast featuring Sarah Jessica Parker and Ashton Kutcher in third place, and Joyful Noise, the musical comedy with Queen Latifah and Dolly Parton at No. 4.

The remainder of the list consists of holdovers including the blockbuster Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol starring Tom Cruise, the Oscar winner Meryl Streep in The Iron Lady and the family film We Bought a Zoo with Matt Damon and Scarlett Johansson.

According to Rentrak’s OnDemand Essentials, the top ten most-viewed titles follow:

On Amazon’s Instant Video ranking for television shows, the Golden Globe Award-winner Mad Men, starring Jon Hamm remains the top TV VOD with last week’s episode, “Dark Shadows.”

Another AMC channel hit, The Killing, the American version of Denmark’s hit crime series, comes in second place. Other popular shows include supernatural-themed shows, Once Upon a Time, Fringe and Vampire Diaries.

The series finale of the popular comedy-drama Desperate Housewives, starring Terry Hatcher, Eva Longoria and Vanessa Williams, brought the successful show to a conclusion after an eight-year run. – AFP-Relaxnews
