FEB 18 — I am genuinely puzzled by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak. Outwardly, he seemed much brighter than his predecessor and has been spared a campaign to force him out by destroyer extraordinaire Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

But he has been making one mistake after another. Just take today, for example, he spoke to the Chinese about the crossroads facing the community, an engagement aimed at making the Chinese trust him more.

And later tonight his wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, is scheduled to be a guest at a Perkasa dinner.

How wonderful? In the morning, the PM spreads some butter on the Chinese and at night, his better half pays homage to Perkasa, the single most right-wing organisation in the country, the one organisation that has consistently attacked non-Malays.

Sorry, sir, but you can't have it both ways. You either are a moderate or you are a supporter of Perkasa.

In similar vein, you are either the prime minister of all Malaysians, all the time, or you are not. There is no such thing as being the prime minister of all Malaysians sometimes.

So instead of making jarring observations like Kelantan and not Sabah being the poorest state in Malaysia, and appearing happy to put down the Opposition-held state, it would have been much better to state your commitment to develop every corner of the country. An economically backward Kelantan is an indictment of a federal government that has been stingy in helping Kelantan as well as depriving the state of oil royalties.

In conclusion, much more is expected from you, prime minister. If it is true that Malaysian Chinese are at crossroads, it is due to policies, practices of the BN government.

After all, you are the only ones who have ruled the country. So if Malaysia is at the precipice of disaster, surely it is the BN who have placed the country in a precarious situation.
