Chong Wei breezes past first round of Australian Open

KUALA LUMPUR, April 3 — Datuk Lee Chong Wei broke little sweat in the first round of the Australian Open Badminton Championship at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre today.

Lee (picture) took just 31 minutes to despatch off Arvind Bhat of India in 21-10 and 21-18 to set up a meeting with Indonesian Prasojo Adi Andrianus in the next round.

Prasojo won his first round match against Anthony Joe from the host nation in 21-4 and 21-8.

Malaysia’s second singles Liew Daren on the other hand was given a stiff fight by Norway’s Marius Myhre before prevailing in 18-21, 21-11, and 21-11.

Compatriot Chong Wei Feng also advanced to the next round after carving out a 21-9 and 21-11 victory against Kenny Ng of Australia.

Mohamad Arif Abdul Latif, the national back player who was recently promoted to the elite division, was also stretched to a three-setter by Ji Hoon Hong of South Korea.

He won in 14-21, 21-18 and 21-16.

Joining him was world junior champion Zulfadli Zulkiffli who beat New Zealand’s Thomas Ellis in 21-14 and 21-16. — Bernama
