Malaysia ready for Sudirman Cup

KUALA LUMPUR, April 15 — Fresh from their victory at the inaugural Axiata Cup tonight, the national badminton squad are ready to face the crunch in the 13th Sudirman Cup at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil from May 19 to 26.

World’s number one shuttler Datuk Lee Chong Wei said the national squad would have to show their mettle to qualify for at least the semi-finals.

“Before the Sudirman Cup, Malaysia will be competing in a few tournaments, including the Malaysian Open Championship, which could be used as a preparation for the Sudirman Cup,” he told reporters at the close of the Axiata Cup 2013 here last night.

Chong Wei said Malaysian shuttlers needed to improve their fitness and teamwork, avoid injuries which could affect their performance, and support and assist each other.

National singles chief coach Rashid Sidek said Malaysia would sent 20 players to take part in the Sudirman Cup 2013. — Bernama
