KUALA TERENGGANU, Feb 28 — More than 500 local and foreign mountaineering enthusiasts are expected to take part in the Terengganu Mount Berembun International Challenge (TMBIC) in Dungun on March 15-16.
Kembara Negara Association (PKN) president Datuk Mohd Khalid Yunus said the TMBIC was organised in conjunction with the Visit Terengganu Year 2013, as an effort to attract tourists.
“Our objective is to promote the sport of mountain climbing to the people and tourists, both locals and foreigners,” he said in a statement, here today.
The event is part of a circuit to promote mountain climbing as a sport and the Terengganu leg is the second of four circuits with Gunung Datuk in Negeri Sembilan hosting the first while Gunung Jerai, Kedah (May 25) and Gunung Nuang, Selangor (Dec 8) host the third and fourth, respectively.
“We are confident of achieving the 500 target because the first circuit held as the Yam Tuan Antah Challenge in Gunung Datuk attracted 611 participants, including 40 from Kenya, Brunei, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand and the United Kingdom,” he said.
The participant who accumulates the highest points from the four circuits will be crowned King of the Mountain 2013 and a ticket to participate in the Mount Kinabalu International Climbathon 2014 in Sabah.
The challenge offers RM50,000 in prize money.
