The Nexus 7 is available at Asus retailers starting today.KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 21 ― Asus launched the Google Nexus 7 tablet here today, adding yet another contender to the increasingly crowded tablet market.

Malaysia is one of the earliest countries in Asia to receive the device, ahead of even Singapore and China.

What sets this particular tablet apart is that it is Google’s first. It is also the flagship device for the latest iteration of the Android operating system, Android 4.1 or “Jelly Bean”.

Asus claims the Nexus 7 is the first quad-core tablet, running an NVIDIA Tegra 3 1.3GHz processor. It is also optimised for games and graphics-intensive applications with a dedicated 12-core GeForce graphical processing unit.

The Nexus 7 has received rave reviews for its compact 7-inch form factor, which weighs only 340g. Though it was launched in two versions in the US, namely the 8GB and 16GB versions, only the latter will be available here.

Asus has no plans to bring in the 8GB model at the present time.

Malaysian users can also purchase apps for the tablet from the Google Play store, though at press time movies and books are not yet available.

There are more than 600,000 apps available on Google’s app platform for now.

The Nexus 7 retails for RM999 and is available starting today at official Asus retailers.
