NEW YORK, Feb 1 — Seventy-five per cent of Americans use their phone in the bathroom, with BlackBerry users being the most likely to answer a call while in the restroom, according to the results of a survey by marketing agency 11mark released January 30.
The survey found that 75 per cent of Americans admitted to texting, emailing or even making calls while in the bathroom.
Android users were the most likely to use their phone in the washroom with 87 per cent admitting to doing so; they were followed closely by BlackBerry (84 per cent) and iPhone users (77 per cent) doing the same.
However out of Android, iPhone and BlackBerry users, it was BlackBerry users who were the most likely to answer a call in the bathroom, with 75 per cent admitting to doing so. In comparison only 67 per cent of Android and 60 per cent of iPhone users have done the same.
The survey found that while there was little difference between the sexes when it came to using their phone in the bathroom, with 74 per cent of men and 76 per cent of women admitting to doing so, men were the most likely to use the restroom as a place of business. Overall 20 per cent of men surveyed admitted to making ‘work-related' calls from the bathroom while only 13 per cent of women said they had done the same.
These findings reflect a perhaps extreme side of the prevalence of mobile devices and the need for connectivity in all aspects of everyday life. A Nielsen/Yahoo survey released in late January found that 86 per cent of mobile phone users in the US accessed internet on their mobile while watching TV, with social networking being one of the most popular activities.
The survey conducted by 11mark and released January 30 polled 1,000 American mobile phone users throughout October 2011. — AFP/Relaxnews
