NEW YORK, Feb 14 — In an effort to promote the notion that it uses only fresh chicken, KFC has launched a Twitter and Facebook campaign that will give away free gift certificates to followers in the US.

Launched yesterday, the world’s largest chicken chain announced that it’ll be issuing 20 random tweets from @KFC_Colonel until the end of February, with each post containing a link to a “secret page” on KFC.com. The first 50 people to enter their email address will be sent a US$5 (RM15.50) gift certificate for a meal at KFC.

Posts will also be announced on Facebook.

Meanwhile, in a different kind of viral campaign altogether, KFC Malaysia is in operation damage control after a video uploaded on YouTube last week captured a brawl involving employees and customers when the restaurant ran out of chicken early on in the night.

On its Facebook page, KFC Malaysia noted the employee — who was charged with assault after the customer was punched in the face — has been suspended and a police investigation is under way.

Last year, Twitter said that the McLobster sandwich from McDonald’s, sold in a limited number of outlets in the US, and Starbucks’ Trenta cup size — the largest coffee cup size at 31 oz — were the most popular hashtags in the food and drink category for all of 2011. — AFP-Relaxnews
