Stockholm visitors found few hotel bargains this summer

September 13, 2012

LONDON, Sept 13 — Tourists visiting Stockholm this summer would have had trouble finding bargains for their overnight stays, more so than in any other destination in Europe, a recent survey shows. The best summer hotel bargains were to be found in Athens, Budapest and Warsaw.

The survey published by the travel website cheaphotels.com looked at lodging rates of the cheapest available double room of 30 main European destinations between June and August 2012. By looking at each city’s cheapest available room (at least two-star hotels), the list reflects the minimum amount travellers had to spend to stay overnight.

Stockholm was followed by Edinburgh with an average rate of €109 and Venice with €103.

With an average cost of €23 a night, Athens recorded the cheapest hotel prices this summer. Surprisingly, Moscow and St Petersburg, considered to be some of the most expensive cities in the world, recorded some of the lowest room rates with €61 and €59 respectively.

The ranking is the result of an average price calculated for each destination. For the 30 European destinations, the price of the cheapest available double room (minimum two-star hotel) was established for the following time periods: June 6-10, June 20-24, July 11-15, July 25-29, August 8-12 and August 15-19. The prices were generated about one month in advance of the respective periods. Only hotels located in the city centre or less than 1km from it were considered.
