5.0-magnitude quake hits Acheh – Bernama

An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.0 on the Ritcher scale hit Aceh at 12.15pm today. No tsunami warning was issued.

According to Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), the epicentre of the quake was 47km to the southwest of Aceh's Singkil district, and 77km to the north of Laut Tapanuli, North Sumatra.

"The epicentre of the quake was at a depth of 12km underwater and the tremors could be felt for two seconds", said a spokesman for the agency.

People fled their homes to escape the quake but returned soon after once the tremors stopped.

So far no loss of lives or damage to property has been reported.
