Four soldiers killed in Pattani ambush
BANGKOK, July 28 – Four soldiers were killed and two others injured when they were ambushed and attacked by armed insurgents in Mayor, Pattani today.
The 16 insurgents were armed with M-16 and AK-47 assault rifles and shotguns.
Mayor police chief Col Korn-art Suwankam said the insurgents onboard three pick-ups attacked the soldiers who were riding on three motorcycles at Kampung Dua in Jalan Palas-Mayor about 7am.
“They began firing continuously at the soldiers who could not return fire,” he said.
The insurgents also threw spikes on roads leading to the village in a move to delay assistance from the authorities, he added.
More than 5,000 people have died since suspected separatists resumed their armed campaign to seek independence for the three southern provinces of Narathiwat, Pattani and Yala, about eight years ago. – Bernama
